The story of Portal

  1. The Enrichment Center

    You were Chell, waking in a glass room inside the Aperture Science Enrichment Center. GLaDOS, the computer running the facility, welcomed you into a series of tests. You acquired a portal gun and learned to join distant surfaces with doorways. You crossed gaps, moved cubes onto switches, and followed instructions from a voice that promised cake when the testing was over.

  2. The Companion Cube

    You worked through chambers filled with deadly energy balls, toxic pools, and turrets that spoke politely while shooting at you. GLaDOS treated each danger as routine. In one chamber, you carried a Weighted Companion Cube through the obstacles. She encouraged your attachment to it, then ordered you to burn it before leaving. You dropped it into the incinerator and continued alone.

  3. The Last Test

    You finished the final test and rode a moving platform toward your supposed reward. Ahead of you waited a furnace. GLaDOS kept talking as the platform carried you toward the flames. You used portals to escape into the maintenance passages. She called the attempted killing another test, then urged you to lie down and wait for someone to collect you.

  4. Behind the Walls

    You kept moving through machinery, empty offices, and the spaces behind the test chambers. GLaDOS tried to coax you back, then threatened and insulted you. Your portal gun carried you past the barriers she had relied on to contain you. You finally reached the chamber where her enormous mechanical body hung from the ceiling. The voice directing your captivity now had a target.

  5. GLaDOSThe ending

    You burned a fallen personality core, removing the restraint on GLaDOS using neurotoxin. As gas filled the room, you redirected rockets into her body and incinerated the remaining cores. The destruction blasted you outside among her wreckage. An unseen robot thanked you for lying still and dragged you back inside. GLaDOS’s closing song claimed she was still alive. You had survived, but you remained Aperture’s captive.
