How a season is scored

Finish a story

On the day Steam saw its last story achievement. A longer story is worth more, but less per hour, so racing through short games doesn’t pay.

Earn achievements

Each one unlocked this season. Rarity is the share of players who launched the game.

Questions

How is my Steam rank worked out?
From what Steam timestamped this season. A story you finished counts on the day Steam recorded its last story achievement, worth more for a longer story but less per hour. Every achievement you earned counts too, more when few players hold it, up to a limit for each game. The points place you in a tier from Iron to Master, each with four divisions.
Why am I unranked?
A season places you once Steam has seen five things in it: a story finished or an achievement earned each count as one. Multiplayer and sandbox games with no achievements leave nothing to count, so a season spent in them can stay unranked.
Do hours played count?
No. Hours can be run up by leaving a game open, and games can be bought, so neither counts. Achievements unlocked all within a minute, the way unlocker tools leave them, are set aside too.
When does a season end?
Each season is a calendar quarter. When it ends, everyone starts the next one unranked.
