The story of Pillars of Eternity

6 parts, from the opening to the ending (where it turned on your choices, what every ending shares). Read it before Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire. This page tells the ending.

  1. Cilant Lis

You arrived in the Dyrwood seeking a new home. An ambush and a deadly storm drove you through the ruins of Cilant Lis, where you witnessed a stranger's ritual. You emerged as a Watcher, able to see and speak with souls. You also suffered an Awakening: memories from a previous life invaded your mind and threatened your sanity.

  2. Caed Nua

You sought answers in Gilded Vale, where children were being born without souls. People called this affliction Waidwen's Legacy. A dead animancer directed you to Maerwald at Caed Nua. You found another Watcher whose awakened memories had overwhelmed him. He attacked, and you killed him. You inherited his stronghold and followed his lead toward the secretive Leaden Key.

  3. Defiance Bay

You investigated the Leaden Key in Defiance Bay with Lady Webb's help. You traced its operations to Thaos ix Arkannon, the man behind the ritual and a figure from your former life. His agents sabotaged research into souls and blamed animancers for the results. Your dealings with the city's rival factions depended on your choices as you pursued him.

  4. The Duc's Hearing

You brought your findings to a hearing on animancy, but Thaos murdered the duc and plunged Defiance Bay into violence. He also killed Lady Webb. You reached her lingering soul and learned his destination: Twin Elms. Following him, you sought divine assistance at Teir Evron. Which gods you promised to serve, and whether you honored those promises, rested with you.

  5. Sun in Shadow

You descended beneath Burial Isle and met Iovara, a woman your former self had helped condemn. You learned the secret she had exposed: the Engwithans had manufactured the gods from sacrificed souls. You had served Thaos as an inquisitor in that earlier life. Now he was diverting the souls of unborn children to empower Woedica, while discrediting the research that threatened his secret.

  6. The Souls' FateThe ending

You defeated Thaos and decided what happened to his soul. At the great machine, you also determined the fate of the stolen souls; their destination depended on your final choice. You ended the machinery's theft and the Hollowborn crisis, but its consequences differed with your decision. Thaos's death silenced your waking visions. You finally slept, then found a passage back to the surface.
